Susanna Yvonne [citation needed] "Susie" Carmichael (born April 9, 2019) is a a main character in Nickelodeon's 2021 animated TV series Rugrats. Susie is excitable and eager to follow Tommy's lead, and she offers up some rambling ideas of her own, culled from tidbits she picks up as an actual "early reader." Whatever Susie can't read, she makes up, often with fanciful results. Susie stands up for the babies against Angelica, but she's too small to be a real threat and unable to inform the adults of Angelica's schemes.[1] Unlike her 1991 counterpart, Susie has been reimagined as two years old in order to place her in the playpen with the other babies.[2]

Description

Susie Carmichael is excitable and eager to follow Tommy’s lead, and she offers up some imaginative ideas of her own, culled from tidbits she picks up from A “reading” her mother’s medical books or absorbed from her father’s science lessons. Susie loves narwhals, space adventures, and all things fanciful. She has a strong sense of justice, speaking а out against unfairness at every opportunity. Susie stands up for the babies against Angelica, but she is just young enough to sometimes believe Angelica’s lies at the same time as she’s starting to doubt her. [3]

Looks

Like her 1991 counterpart, Susie is a girl of African American descent with black eyes and mascara around each eye. Her hair is braided and tied up in three ponytails with gold yellow hair ties along with red flower barrettes. She wears a yellow dress with purple wavy lines on it, purple leggings, and red flats.

In the episode "Bottles Away": Susie as a 1-year-old wearing only a long sleeve yellow shirt and a diaper with no socks or shoes. The rest of her appearance remains the same.

Relationships

  • Lucy Carmichael - Lucy is Susie's mother, and so is sometimes seen doing things with her such as taking her for walks. Due to Lucy being a doctor, Susie sees her as a role model.
  • Randy Carmichael - Randy is Susie's father, and so also sometimes hangs out with her.
  • Edwin Carmichael - Unlike in the original series where Edwin was Susie's brother, here, he is her cousin and so they see less of each other. Despite this, they are still very good friends and enjoy playing with each other, even since Edwin stopped being able to understand babies.
  • Buster Carmichael - Like Edwin, Buster is rewritten to be Susie's cousin instead of her brother. Susie doesn't seem to get along with Buster as well as Edwin, though she does still like him.
  • Tommy Pickles - Tommy is one of Susie's friends, and she often tries to educate him and the other babies by "reading" books, though sometimes gets the information wrong because she can't actually read.
  • Phil and Lil DeVille - Susie is friends with the twins, and often plays with them or tries to teach them things alongside the other babies.
  • Chuckie Finster - Chuckie is another one of Susie's friends, and due to his jittery personality, she sometimes is a source of reassurance to him.
  • Angelica Pickles - Angelica and Susie's rivalry is not as intense as it was in the original series, but they still are occasionally at odds. Angelica likes to scare and annoy Susie just as much as the other babies, but they are still friends deep down and have sometimes teamed up.
  • Dil Pickles - Susie is more patient with Dil than some of the other kids, and often tries to cheer him up when he cries.
  • Kimi Watanabe - Due to both being well acquainted with Angelica but more morally upright than her, Kimi and Susie get along well, with Susie being fully onboard with pairing up Chas and Kira and being open to the idea of spending more time with Kimi.
  • Spike - Like the other babies, Susie finds Spike fun to play with.

Trivia

  • Susie and her parents, Randy and Lucy, are much more prominent characters in the reboot than they were back in the original series, appearing right away in the first episode and with Susie appearing in almost every episode alongside the other kids (and in the first episode of the reboot, it's implied that Randy has known Stu and Chas since middle school). Susie's also part of the reboot's intro, although she was included in the intro for the original series starting with the episode "Angelicon." Some other changes to Susie's character for the reboot are:
    • 1.) She's made to be the same age as Chuckie instead of being the same age as Angelica, thus making Tommy's cousin the oldest of the main group of kids.
    • 2.) She was the youngest of four kids in the originally (having two older and an older sister), but for the reboot, Susie appears to be an only child.
  • In the 2021 series, she's revealed to have an alien doll that she refers to as a "Debbie-doll." She appears to have eventually lost interest in playing with it prior to it being taken by Lady De-Clutter (who's later revealed to be a scam artist), and when she gets it back, she appears to be a little creeped out by it. Susie ends up giving the doll to Lil, who loves it (although even she ends up feeling creeped out by it by the events of "Chuckie vs. the Vacuum").
  • In an interview regarding the 2021 series, showrunner Eryk Casemiro stated that one of the reasons Susie's age was changed is that it was often an impediment to the story that Susie could speak to the adults because she was as old as Angelica. This meant that if Susie was aware of a plan Angelica had hatched, she could just tell it to the parents, and it would be over. Making her around Chuckie's age meant that she could be used a lot more in the series.[4]
  • She has been seen as a 1-year-old for the first time across any iterations of the Rugrats franchise in the 2021 series episode "Bottles Away" when she tells Tommy about the time, she gave up her bottle. It is also revealed how she gave it up: she and Lucy were at the farmer's market, and left her bottle at one of the stands.
