"Rugrats Rap" (stylized as Rug Rap in the credits) is a promotional Rugrats song written by Tom Pomposello and Mike Stanley. The song (which has an urban Hip-Hop/Rap sound) mentions the titular Rugrats main characters, and the adventures and hi-jinks they get into in the Rugrats series. It was featured exclusively on many Nickelodeon Home Video Tapes, (most notability being a promotional clip before the home video release of "Harriet The Spy") along with Rugrats Rock, beginning with the Chuckie the Brave VHS.

Lyrics[]

Tommy, Chuckie, Phil & Lil and Susie
(laughs)

(Chorus)
(It's a Rugrat) From under the mat,
(It's a Rugrat) It's a Rugrat Rap. (x2)

(Verse 1)
These are the kids that are bringin' in the new style
Out of the crib with a bib, just to make you smile
Milk in the bottle of the Rugrats just in case,
They need to squirt that milk in yo' big face.
(SPLISH! SPLASH! BOOM!) There is is, Gotcha!
Let the Rugrats outsmart ya,
The rat (the Rugrat) Curious as a cat,
Crawlin' on the scene, comin' clean, cos they all at,
At home, in the cradle or the toy store
Lookin' for adventure cos they want more.

(Record scratch, repeat chorus)

(Bridge)
Yeah, we gonna kick it one mo' time with Tommy, Chuckie, Susie, Phil, Lil and all the crew,
Cos a baby's gotta do what a baby's gotta do, y'know?

(Verse 2)
Little Tommy Pickles and the gang, they don't mess around,
Git up, fall down, crawlin' into your town,
Don't look now but comin' up behind you,
(Hey!) It's a Rugrat sneaking up to find you.

(Repeat Chorus)

Yeah, the Rugrat Rap.
(Yeah, we outta here, boi!)
Tommy, Chuckie, Phil & Lil and Susie,
And Nickelodeon®!
(rappers laughing)

Artist Controversy[]

The performer(s) behind Rugrats Rap is officially currently unknown. For the longest, it was believed that successful Hip-Hop boyband Kris Kross was said to be the artist behind "Rugrats Rap", (it was even reported and mentioned by the press and Nickelodeon themselves during several commercial breaks, SNICK promotions, and other media, for this to be the case) but this is incorrect, and Kris Kross is not the performer of "Rugrats Rap". However, another theory that similar Hip-Hop group Immature, (more specifically Marques Houston and Jerome "Romeo" Jones from Immature) are the artist/singers behind "Rugrats Rap". Although remarkably, the artist behind "Rugrats Rap" have currently officially not yet been revealed.

Trivia[]

  • This song mentions most of the characters, but it does not mention Angelica.
  • It is not known when this was written and/or recorded, but since it mentions Susie, it would not be from earlier than 1993.
  • Contrary to popular belief, Kris Kross was not involved in the making of this song.
  • The singer is a young boy with a New York accent.
  • The singer is unknown.
  • The clips used in the music video were reversed so far:
    • The Rugrats intro: when Tommy squirts milk out of his bottle just before the title card shows up.
    • Tommy's First Birthday: when Didi picks Tommy up from his crib.
    • Rebel Without a Teddy Bear: when Angelica pulls the curtains at the end.
  • The song is a bonus feature on the DVD Decade in Diapers.
  • This was also seen on the VHS For the 1996 film Harriet the Spy, which was the first film from Nickelodeon.
  • On May 1, 2013, Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly (of Kris Kross) was found unresponsive in his Atlanta home and was eventually pronounced dead at around 5pm. On Thursday, May 2nd, 2013 at 11:58 PM, TeenNick's The '90s Are All That (now NickRewind) programming block re-aired the music video for "Rugrats Rap" in honor of the late rap star before airing a scheduled episode of Hey Arnold!.
  • The song is shortly played in the 90's Are All That anthem as it plays "It's a Rugrat, it's a Rugrat rap, it's a Rugrat from under the mat".
  • In the first re-branded version of the 90's Are All That, The Splat, the song was played during commercial during the Reptar Takeover Week.
  • The roll call at the beginning of the song, which states Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, and Susie's names, is used in the Remixalodeon song on The Splat.
  • This song was featured on the 1998 compilation album Best of Nicktoons, as well as part of the promotional CD "The Jetsam Collection" as part of the "Nickelodeon Sound & Music Library", which also included the instrumental version.
