"Destination Moon" is a Season 3 episode of Rugrats.
Characters Present[]
Synopsis[]
Using Grandpa's Art Deco camping trailer as a spaceship, the Rugrats play space travelers after Chuckie loses his toy rocket.
- Description from Klasky-Csupo
Plot[]
When Grandpa Lou brings home a mini camper/caravan/trailer (depending on where you live), the kids go inside to explore it further. They end up believing that the vehicle is actually a spaceship to take them to the Moon, where Chuckie's toy rocket has apparently landed.
They get trapped inside and are shut inside the garage, which they believe to be the Moon. While the babies explore the "Moon", their parents realize they're missing and search all over for them. When they finally look in the garage, the babies believe aliens are looking for them and hide. The adults quickly find them, though Chuckie panics and bites Stu's finger.
Later, in the playpen, Chuckie worries that Stu is angry at him because he's never heard him say "those words" before. Tommy assures Chuckie it's no big deal. With the kids safe and sound, Stu and Didi argue with Lou over how dirty his caravan/mini camper is.
Trivia[]
- Phil's line of "In space, no one can hear you scream." is the famous line from Ridley Scott's 1979 film Alien.
- Many references from Star Trek, Alien, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and other famous science fiction cinema make this episode of Rugrats a favorite among fans of the genre.
- A couple of classic rock references are also included ("Ground Control to Major Tom" is the opening line to David Bowie's "Space Oddity." When the gang "lands on the moon", Chuckie says they must be on the Dark Side Of The Moon (which may also be a possible homage to the Pink Floyd album of the same name).
- Tommy says walking on the moon is just "one small step", but Chuckie thinks it's a "giant leap", a reference to Neil Armstrong's first words upon landing on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind."
- This episode was re-established for the 2021 reboot as the episode "Moon Story".
