Summary
Tommy doesn't want to face the reality that, one day, he'll have to give up his bottle. - Description from Paramount+
Plot
The kids and their parents (including a heavily pregnant-Didi) are all spending the day at the beach -- when the kids accidentally knock over the coolers containing all the food and drinks they packed, the adults (minus Didi) rush to gather everything and make sure that the kids are safe. But during this time, Tommy's bottle is swept out to sea by the tide and Didi admits that she didn't pack any extra bottles for him. Didi confesses to Betty and Lucy that she's been trying to wean Tommy off of his bottle before the baby comes, but she's having a hard time bringing herself to do so. Betty gives Didi an extra sippy cup that she packed to give to Tommy -- however, Tommy's very resistant to using a sippy cup instead of a bottle, figuring that he can just use a bottle forever.
Tommy then decides to lead the others on a journey to find the bottle that got swept away by the tide -- but when it becomes apparent just how determined Tommy is to get his bottle back, Susie pulls Chuckie and the twins aside and points out to them that they're going to have to give Tommy what she calls "The Bottle Talk." Basically, the others tell the stories of when they all stopped drinking bottles (ultimately switching over to sippy cups).
- Phil and Lil both stop drinking from bottles on the same day, when they were at their mom's coffeehouse.
- Lil had seen another kid drop their sippy cup and, being fascinated it, picked it up and started drinking from it, never drinking from a bottle ever again.
- Phil had seen a chocolate chip cookie on the table in their play area, and when he tried eating the cookie and drinking from his bottle at the same time, he tossed his bottle away and chose the cookie, ultimately never drinking from a bottle ever again.
- When Susie and her mom, Lucy, were shopping at the farmer's market one day, Susie just casually left her bottle in one of the stands and never drank from a bottle ever again. The bottle that Susie left behind was eventually picked up by another baby.
- Chuckie claims that one day, when his dad was taking him out for a stroller ride, a dog took his bottle and gave it to another baby that was going on a stroller ride with their mom. Chas gave Chuckie a sippy cup that he had packed, and Chuckie has never drunk from a bottle ever since.
Tommy's still determined to get his own bottle back, figuring that he can just drink from a bottle forever. But his friends all point out that, whether he likes it or not, giving up bottle-drinking is just a part of getting older and he can't just keep doing it forever. Tommy and the gang eventually spot Tommy's bottle in the ocean, which is eventually brought back in by the tide. Betty suggests that Stu and Didi take it as a sign to try and wean Tommy some other day. Tommy's excited to have his bottle back. but for some reason he can't bring himself to drink from it. The others are surprised by this, and Tommy decides that the best person to use his old bottle is his soon-to-be born younger sibling. Tommy then finally starts drinking from a sippy cup.
Trivia
- This is the third of five episodes where Didi's shown to be visibly pregnant after revealing her second pregnancy at the end of "Tot Springs Showdown" as well as the third episode of her wearing her maternity clothes (instead of her usual full-length long-sleeved red dress).
- This episode is the only time we've ever seen Susie as a 1 year old.
- It is also revealed that Phil and Lil have also been weaned off of their bottles at this point in time as they tell Tommy about their times of switching from bottles to sippy cups.
- The plot of Tommy having to give up his bottle was also used in the 1991 series episode, "Weaning Tommy." But unlike in the original series, Tommy ultimately gives up his bottle and starts using a sippy cup instead.
