Synopsis

When the Pickles and the Finsters go to the beach, Chuckie has a personal mission -- to set free the "Sea Moneys" ("Sea Monkeys") that his dad gave him.

- Description from Klasky Csupo.

Plot

Chas has gotten what he feels is a great pet for Chuckie: sea monkeys. Although Stu is less than sure little shrimp are decent pets, Chuckie feels the same enthusiasm his father does for them. Tommy points out they don't look anything like the illustration on the box, and they come to the conclusion it's because they're sad, that they miss the ocean.

It turns out both the Pickles and the Finsters are taking a mini-vacation down the beach soon, which gives the babies an opportunity to release the sea monkeys back into the ocean so they stash the sea monkeys inside the cooler. When they first arrive at the beach, Angelica warns them of the Sand Man, a creature composed entirely of sand that eats babies.

In a side-story, Grandpa Lou and Boris begin playing cards, which always tends to end in a disaster. The two argue over one of the plays that was made, which results in Boris flicking the cards everywhere in "52-pickup" fashion.

Every time the babies move the cooler, someone always manages to move it back closer to the family. Frustrated, Tommy suggests they should give up, but after an encouraging speech from Chuckie, they manage to bring the cooler towards the ocean, and send it out to sea, Chuckie giving each sea monkey a proper sendoff.

Trivia

  • In the next episode, Family Feud, Didi says to Stu that it's just a game. In this episode, she repeats this to Lou, but both times it's useless.
  • Though Angelica appears, she is a secondary character with most of the adults.
  • The group sings the 1905 folk song Low Bridge on the way to the beach, with Lou singing the 15 miles on the Erie Canal parts.
  • The difference between the illustrated sea monkeys and the actual sea monkeys is not unique to this episode. Many kids have learned the hard way that sea monkeys don't even come close to resembling the illustrations and in fact are a variety of shrimp (but not one edible to humans).
  • This episode is also known as On the Beach.
  • Phil and Lil are the only Rugrats who don't appear.

Quotes

  • Boris: Hey, wait a sec, where's the two of hearts?
  • Lou: Two of hearts!? I didn't take no two of hearts!
  • Boris: When you take the card, you gotta play the card, you paskunyek!
  • Lou: Where'd you hear those rules, Budapest!?

  • Chuckie (screaming after he sees Chaz buried in the sand): My dad's been decaffeinated!
